Qualifications & Experience

Key Accountabilities:

  • Champion a proactive safety culture and embed Health & Safety as a core value across all Gateways.

  • Support the implementation of H&S strategies aligned with business goals and key risk areas.

  • Identify, assess, and manage risks—especially in Technical Services and Operations—to ensure legal compliance and protect reputation.

  • Review and maintain risk assessments, SOPs, and contractor safety protocols.

  • Track action plans, monitor performance, and support continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Work closely with Gateway teams to embed ownership of Health & Safety across all departments.

  • Provide guidance and coaching to managers, supporting day-to-day operations and new projects.

  • Ensure effective safety planning for capital works and project lifecycles.

  • Act as local lead for H&S systems and contribute to relevant committees and external liaison.

  • Develop and deliver tailored training to ensure employee competence at all levels.

  • Support internal safety campaigns (e.g., Protecting the Magic) and drive consistent, engaging communication.

  • Promote a culture of openness and continuous learning through forums and feedback loops.

  • Conduct audits, inspections, and trend analysis to identify gaps and drive improvements.

  • Lead or support Operational and Use Risk Assessment workshops.

  • Support emergency planning, drills, and response coordination with internal and external teams.

  • Investigate incidents and near-misses, ensuring root cause analysis and corrective actions.

  • Liaise with insurers and claims handlers to ensure proper resolution and lessons learned.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Proven experience in a Health and Safety management role, preferably within a high-risk or complex environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing and implementing safety policies, initiatives and training programs.
  • Experience in conducting risk assessments, safety audits and inspections.
  • Track record in incident investigation and root cause analysis and the implementation of corrective actions.
  • Safety qualification(s) required, e.g. OSHA 30 or NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent.
  • Safety qualification(s) preferred, e.g. Degree in Safety Management (or similar), ASP, CSP, SMS, OHST (according to BCSP) etc.
  • Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH) or working towards Chartered status (desirable), or similar.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data reporting tools.
  • Excellent management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and drive compliance across all management levels.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all management levels.
  • Thorough working knowledge of relevant occupational Health and Safety standards and regulations.
  • “Hands On” safety management experience in a safety-critical organization. Experience in delivering Heath and Safety training.
  • Experience with Health and Safety management systems and auditing.
  • Analytical and detail-oriented, with the ability to identify trends, implement corrective actions, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Thorough knowledge of record keeping requirements for injury reporting, investigation and analysis.
  • Proactive approach to problem-solving and decision-making, with a focus on mitigating risks and improving safety performance.
  • Commitment to fostering a culture of safety, well-being, and accountability within an organization.
