 About the Role

This Animal Welfare Host role assists Aquarists in the routine husbandry of SEA LIFE’s marine and freshwater displays. Animal Welfare Host duties may include diet preparation, animal handling, snorkeling, and tending dives. Must be capable of delivering a high standard of work performance in the areas of animal care, backstage cleaning, and guest interaction. This role will deliver world class standards of safety, guest service, and cleanliness. 

  • Provide daily care of aquatic animal exhibits including diet preparation, feeding and general care and maintenance of aquatic exhibits in accordance with established protocols.

 

  • Provide daily care of terrestrial animal exhibits (including reptiles and invertebrates) including diet preparation, feeding, and general care and maintenance in accordance with established protocols.

  • Detailed record keeping of animal health treatments, exhibit maintenance, and feeding logs and basic water quality analysis of exhibits.

 

  • Interact with guests during public animal feeds.

 

  • Maintain and prepare accurate daily records for aquarium systems including water quality analysis, exhibit specimens, and animal health related paperwork.

  • Act as a tender for dive operations.

  • Work with Displays team to provide the animal care, cleaning and maintenance of aquarium displays requiring snorkeling.
  • Must interact and communicate with guests, management, veterinarians, and other individuals and be able to deliver quality customer service.

  • Assist Displays staff with the husbandry of aquarium systems while ensuring a consistently high standard of animal health and welfare.

  • Assist in the continual development of the Displays areas in line with the long-term goals of the company.

  • Ability to meet AZA, USDA and Merlin Health and Safety standards.

About You

  • Ability to maintain a clean/organized work environment.
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs.
  • Ability to work effectively with limited supervision independently as well as in a team-oriented environment.

  • Ability to provide the best environment for animals and is comfortable working with a variety of animals including sharks, stingrays, turtles, fishes, and more. 

  • Ability to effectively follow directions and observe and remember details. 

  • Ability to maintain a friendly, polite, service-oriented demeanor.
  • Ability to work with computer software and data-entry.

  • Effective decision-making skills are required.

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.

  • Must be able to communicate and support the Aquarium’s mission and goals.
  • Ability to obtain CPR/AED/First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification

  • In order to apply for this role you must be at least 16 years of age.  

Education

  • Working towards a degree in Life Sciences (Biology, Marine Biology, Zoology, Psychology), or a two-year certification from an accredited aquarium science/zoological program preferred.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Some knowledge/experience in aquatic animal husbandry in a professional aquarium environment.
  • Experience working in a guest service work environment.
  • Proven ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and multitask as necessary to meet deadlines.
  • Great organizational skills and detail oriented.
  • Ability to work with people from all levels of discipline.
  • Open to new opportunities and ability to adapt to change.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • SCUBA Open Water Certification.
  • Previous experience working for an AZA accredited facility.
  • Knowledge of the nitrogen cycle and water quality parameters.

 

Work Environment:

Various inside and outside areas within the Attraction, with varying temperatures and floor surfaces. Occasional travel to other Merlin Entertainment Group properties or sites within city.

 

Working Pattern:

Three 8-hour shifts weekly including weekends.

 

Pay Range:

From USD $14.50/hr
