Health & Safety Manager – Essential Functions

As a Health & Safety Manager, you play a crucial role in creating a safe, proactive, and collaborative culture across the Resort. Working alongside the Health & Safety Director, you will help design and implement robust safety programs that not only meet but exceed Merlin’s high standards and all regulatory requirements.

āœ… Proactive Risk Management – Assist in risk assessments, identify potential hazards, and implement effective countermeasures to maintain a world-class safety standard.
āœ… Investigate & Innovate – Monitor safety performance, investigate incidents, and drive continuous improvements to strengthen health and safety practices.
āœ… Be a Trusted Partner – Engage with stakeholders across the Resort, offering guidance and expertise on health and safety best practices.
āœ… Support Growth & Expansion – Assist in ensuring new projects, attractions, and developments are designed and launched with safety at the forefront, collaborating with Merlin Magic Making (MMM) teams as needed.

Key Accountabilities – Driving a Culture of Safety

As a Health & Safety Manager, you will take an active role in ensuring the Resort maintains the highest safety standards while fostering a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

1. Health & Safety Leadership & Culture

šŸ”¹ Champion a proactive safety culture, embedding Health & Safety as a core value across all Resort operations.
šŸ”¹ Drive management ownership and accountability, ensuring every leader plays an active role in safety compliance and best practices.
šŸ”¹ Partner with department heads and line managers to align Health & Safety strategies with broader Resort objectives.

2. Risk Management & Compliance

šŸ”¹ Identify, evaluate, and mitigate risks that impact health, safety, and the Resort’s reputation.
šŸ”¹ Ensure strict compliance with external regulations and internal safety policies, focusing on critical areas like Technical Services and Resort Operations.
šŸ”¹ Oversee the contractor management program, ensuring all safety protocols are clearly defined, communicated, and enforced.
šŸ”¹ Assist in the development and review of Risk Assessments, Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Codes of Safe Working Practice (CoSWP) to maintain the highest safety standards.

3. Continuous Improvement & Training

šŸ”¹ Develop, implement, and monitor safety programs tailored to the Resort’s key risk areas and incident trends.
šŸ”¹ Equip teams with the necessary skills, tools, and training to confidently perform their roles safely.
šŸ”¹ Conduct audits, performance reviews, and trend analysis to drive continuous improvements in safety standards and procedures.

4. Incident Management & Emergency Preparedness

šŸ”¹ Oversee the investigation and resolution of workplace incidents, ensuring timely and effective responses.
šŸ”¹ Assist in managing general liability and workers' compensation claims, ensuring fair outcomes and applying lessons learned.
šŸ”¹ Support emergency preparedness planning, ensuring effective response protocols are in place.

5. Leadership & Strategic Support

šŸ”¹ Develop and track Health & Safety action plans, aligning them with Resort objectives.
šŸ”¹ Serve as the acting Health & Safety Director when required, ensuring uninterrupted leadership and execution of safety initiatives.

2. On-the-Ground Safety Leadership

šŸ”¹ Serve as the Safety Duty Officer on designated trading days, offering real-time expertise and hands-on support to staff and guests.
šŸ”¹ Assist in capital project safety management, collaborating with project managers to ensure risk controls and best practices are in place from design to execution.
šŸ”¹ Guide Resort leadership on legal and technical safety standards, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations.

3. Communication & Cross-Functional Engagement

šŸ”¹ Act as the Resort’s key resource for Health & Safety IT systems, ensuring seamless adoption and utilization.
šŸ”¹ Actively participate in H&S Committee meetings and employee forums, leading discussions and chairing sessions when appropriate.
šŸ”¹ Serve as the Resort’s liaison with regulatory enforcement bodies, providing necessary documentation and support in response to compliance inquiries, incidents, or near-miss investigations.

1. Proactive Safety Audits & Inspections

Emergency Planning & Incident Management – Preparedness & Rapid Response

A safe and secure environment starts with proactive planning and effective response measures. As a Health & Safety Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring the Resort is prepared for emergencies, equipped to handle incidents, and committed to continuous improvement.

1. Emergency Preparedness & Response

šŸ”¹ Plan and coordinate safety drills in collaboration with Resort departments and external agencies, ensuring emergency procedures are tested, refined, and up to date.
šŸ”¹ Support the development and implementation of emergency response plans, ensuring all teams are well-prepared to act swiftly and effectively.

2. Incident Investigation & Risk Mitigation

šŸ”¹ Investigate significant Health & Safety incidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions using root cause analysis to identify key learnings.

3. Security & Compliance Oversight

Qualifications & Experience

Experience & Qualifications – Expertise in Health & Safety Leadership

We seek a highly qualified professional with the knowledge and experience to lead Health and Safety management in a high-risk or complex environment, with a proven record in creating and driving effective safety initiatives.

Required Experience & Expertise

āœ… Proven leadership in a Health & Safety management role, ideally in high-risk or complex environments.
āœ… Expertise in developing and implementing comprehensive safety policies, training programs, and initiatives that elevate safety standards across an organization.
āœ… Experience conducting risk assessments, safety audits, and inspections, ensuring comprehensive safety compliance.
āœ… Track record of managing incident investigations, performing root cause analysis, and overseeing the implementation of corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Qualifications

āœ… Essential:
šŸ”¹ Safety qualification(s) such as OSHA 30 or NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety (or equivalent).

āœ… Preferred:
šŸ”¹ Degree in Safety Management (or similar field).
šŸ”¹ Certifications such as ASP, CSP, SMS, or OHST (according to BCSP).
šŸ”¹ Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH) or actively working toward Chartered status, or an equivalent professional qualification.

Technical & Analytical Skills

āœ… Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data reporting tools, with strong analytical skills to assess trends and drive actionable insights.
