What you'll bring to the team

As the Head of Health & Safety for the Resort, you play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of both employees and guests while leading a team dedicated to delivering world-class care and risk management. This position requires a hands-on approach, working in tandem with various teams to maintain compliance, improve safety culture, and manage critical health services.

Scope of Job:

  1. Leadership Role: You are responsible for overseeing the Health & Safety operations of a resort theme park with more than 1,000 employees and 2 million guests annually.
  2. Team Management: Lead a diverse team, including the Health & Safety Supervisor and Coordinator, alongside a dedicated Health Services team that provides first aid. Oversee the Workers’ Compensation program and general liability (GL) claims process.
  3. Compliance and Reporting: Ensure the Resort meets or exceeds Merlin Entertainment, OSHA, and other jurisdictional standards, managing reporting and legal compliance.
  4. Collaboration: Coordinate with internal and external partners, including the Merlin legal team, external insurance teams, and counterparts across other resorts to implement best practices.

Main Responsibilities:

Health & Safety

  • Support Strategic Goals: Work with the Health, Safety & Security (HSS) Director to achieve Merlin Entertainment Group (MEG) health and safety objectives.
  • OSHA Compliance: Ensure resort-wide operations adhere to OSHA programs, including Fall Protection, Lockout/Tagout, and Confined Space.
  • Ride Safety: Collaborate with the Technical Services and Attractions teams to ensure all ride operations comply with Merlin, ASTM, and other safety standards.
  • Risk Assessment: Maintain an effective risk assessment culture, updating procedures and SOPs, and promoting continuous hazard evaluation and control.
  • Incident Management: Manage employee injury and guest incident investigations, ensuring causes are identified and corrective actions are implemented. Lead investigations requiring special attention.
  • Safety Culture: Champion safety culture improvements and ensure that safety-related training programs, such as “Train the Trainer,” are properly maintained and updated.
  • Internal Collaboration: Work closely with department heads to ensure they meet their safety responsibilities, applying best practices across departments and resorts.
  • Health & Safety Audits: Conduct regular inspections and audits to evaluate the effectiveness of safety programs.

Health Services

  • First Aid Leadership: Oversee the Health Services team, ensuring adequate staffing at first aid stations for guests and employees.
  • Training & Certification: Ensure all medics maintain up-to-date licenses, certifications, and training.
  • Workers’ Compensation: Oversee and manage the Workers’ Compensation program to ensure efficiency and compliance.

General Liability (GL)

  • Claims Management: Act as the primary contact for all GL claims, working closely with legal counsel, insurance partners, and Guest Excellence on documentation, investigations, and follow-up.

Managing Resources

  • Budget Management: Assist in developing and executing the department's budget, managing resources such as the Resort Safety Shoe Program, and overseeing departmental spending.

Qualifications & Experience

Education & Training

  1. Bachelor’s Degree: A bachelor’s degree is required for the role.
  2. Safety-Related Certifications: Preferred candidates will have formal safety-related education or certifications, such as:
    • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Training
    • Additional OSHA courses
    • ASP (Associate Safety Professional) or CSP (Certified Safety Professional) certification
    • Graduate-level safety coursework

Physical Demands

  • Sitting: Ability to sit for extended periods during meetings, paperwork, or travel.
  • Standing & Walking: Prolonged standing and walking are required when moving about the resort and interacting with employees and guests.
  • Dexterity: Adequate finger dexterity to handle paperwork and use a computer.
  • Visual Acuity: Clear vision to read documents and perform tasks such as driving.
  • Hearing: Ability to communicate effectively with individuals both in person and by phone.

Work Environment

  • Variety of Locations: This role involves working in various indoor and outdoor settings, with exposure to different temperatures and types of flooring.

Other Job Requirements

  1. Flexible Hours: Must be willing to work evenings, holidays, and weekends to support resort operations.
  2. Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, with experience generating technical reports and presenting to leadership.
  3. Valid Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are required, along with the willingness to use a personal vehicle for business purposes.
  4. Professional Conduct: Must consistently conduct oneself in a mature, professional manner.
  5. Self-Motivation: Ability to work independently with little to no supervision, maintaining high productivity and initiative.
