This role is perfect for someone who loves ocean animals, wants to learn more about aquarium care, and is excited to support our aquarists while helping create unforgettable guest experiences. Every shift offers a chance to make a splash! ππ
As an Animal Welfare Host, you’ll help care for our amazing aquatic creatures while assisting with behind-the-scenes operations. Under the guidance of our Displays Curator, you’ll:
π¦ Prepare diets & feed a variety of marine and freshwater animals
π Help maintain and clean aquatic exhibits & back-of-house areas
π Keep accurate daily records on animal health & aquarium systems
π§ Assist with water quality testing
π’ Support routine husbandry and care for displays
π€ Deliver fun, educational guest talks & presentations
π Interact with guests to share ocean knowledge & inspire conservation
π§ Assist with the development and improvement of display areas
π€Ώ Act as a tender for SCUBA dives (no diving required)
π Meet AZA & Merlin safety and animal care standards
You’ll work closely with aquarists to ensure our animals receive the highest-quality care, including:
β¨ Backstage cleaning & maintenance
β¨ Diet prep & feeding routines
β¨ Helping keep displays safe, clean, and engaging
β¨ Engaging with guests during interactive programs
β¨ Supporting long-term improvements across the aquarium
You’ll help maintain a safe environment for animals, guests, and team members by:
β Following Health & Safety procedures
β Reporting hazards or risks promptly
β Ensuring safe operations in all exhibit & guest areas
β Helping maintain compliance with Merlin Entertainments policies
π§ͺ Experience:
• Some knowledge of aquatic animal care in a professional or educational setting
• Experience in public interaction or guest services
• Strong attention to detail
• SCUBA Rescue Diver certification is a bonus
π Education:
• Pursuing or holding a degree in Biology, Marine Biology, Zoology, Psychology, or related Life Sciences — OR
• Experience working in aquariums, zoos, or animal care departments — OR
• A mix of practical knowledge and a degree in another field
π¦ Other Requirements:
• Ability to keep workspaces clean and organized
• Comfortable with aquatic smells, excrements, and cold/fresh/marine water
• Capable of following instructions, observing details, and making sound decisions
• Friendly, polite, and service-oriented demeanor when interacting with guests
• Ability to stand for long periods
• Able to communicate the aquarium’s mission with passion
• Flexibility to work weekends, nights, holidays & occasional on-call shifts
π Work takes place in various indoor areas with different temperatures & surfaces
π¦ Occasional outdoor tasks in various weather conditions
π Flexible schedule aligned with attraction operating hours
